Steve Coen, Clinical Director, PhD

My therapeutic orientation is a blended approach that weaves together the principles and techniques of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Systems Theory. This dynamic fusion seeks to understand individuals not only through the lens of their thoughts and behaviors but also within their various social and relational systems.

In this approach, CBT tools are harnessed to identify and reshape unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors, providing clients with practical strategies for managing challenges. Simultaneously, Systems Theory comes into play, acknowledging that these challenges don't exist in isolation. Family dynamics, societal influences, and cultural contexts are all integral components considered in understanding and addressing the client's concerns.

The synergy between CBT and Systems Theory creates a therapeutic space where the focus is not just on changing individual cognitive processes but on fostering positive changes within the broader context of the client's life. It's about recognizing the interconnectedness between an individual's internal world and the external systems that shape their experiences, offering a more comprehensive and tailored approach to promoting well-being.
